January 15, 2020 Glacier walk at Perito Moreno I slept well in the ghetto campground with dogs barking throughout the night. It had been cold, so I had to pull my sleeping bag up and around my head. I got up several times during the night and noticed the bright stars. I was in a valley with trees and light pollution from next door. My alarm went off at 7am. I switched around my luggage so that I could travel with a pannier packed with snacks, extra clothing, and my valuables. We rode around town looking for something open. The first bakery didn’t serve coffee. We found croissants and cappuccino at Panaderia Don Luis, which reminded me of an Italian bakery in Brooklyn. Our ride to the bus station was much more direct than yesterday. We double locked our bikes to a column in front of the station, and queued up for the 9am bus. My name is Robert Hickman. I'm an artist and college professor from Brooklyn, NY. I make sculptural objects, installations, and public art. I've done many transportation related public art projects, the best known being the skylight for the 72nd street subway station on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. I'm recognized for my unicycling and project to cross every single bridge in New York City on a unicycle. I commute everywhere in NYC by bike, often with my dog Blanka . In 2018 I rode coast to coast following the ACA TransAmerica trail. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. January 8, 2020 Puerto Rio Tranquilo to Cochrane 112.15km Ride Time: 9:55 Pedal Time: 9:06 Tour Total Pedaled 901.56km I woke up at 6:30am. My phone was charging in the other room and I went to check the time. It was light out, and I had received a text message. I couldn’t fall back asleep. I ate my Coco Puffs and packed. Scott got up at 7:30am and cooked his oatmeal. It was wet outside and had rained a lot during the night. Last night during our walk back from the pizza place we noticed freshly fallen snow on the mountains. Today was the day we had reservations for the ferry out of Villa O’Higgins, which was still three days ahead of us should we have no more problems. We had an 8:30am start. I began the ride in my long sleeve jersey, sweater, rain jacket, cycling shorts and legwarmers. After 4 km I was getting hot, and took off my rain jacket. It was overcast but not raining.
